Cantábrico 1 es un proyecto fotográfico realizado en medio formato analógico que se sitúa en la zona de Estaca de Bares, lugar de encuentro entre el océano Atlántico con el mar Cantábrico.
En algún momento Bares también fue lugar de encuentro entre una base militar estadounidense que se asentó para monitorear movimientos en tiempos de guerra fría, y una sociedad rural vigente y habitada. Al igual que el océano y el mar, estas sociedades convergieron.
Actualmente, el que también es el punto más septentrional de la península ibérica, vive una nueva realidad. El descenso de la actividad marítima y el desarrollo de la pesca industrial empujaron, sobretodo a los más jóvenes, a buscar alternativas en centros urbanos, permaneciendo sólo aquellos que no pudieron escapar.
En 1991 la base militar se cierra, y de alguna manera, los pueblos que la rodeaban también lo hicieron. Hoy en la zona hay una nueva convergencia entre el abandono y la memoria de quienes continuaron sus vidas entre el Atlántico y el mar Cantábrico.
Cantábrico 1 is a project done in analog medium format, located in the Estaca de Bares, Galicia, a place of encounter between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cantabrian Sea.
At some point Bares was also a meeting place between an US American military base that was set up to monitor movements during the Cold War, and a current and inhabited rural society. Like the ocean and the sea, these societies converged.
In this northernmost point of Iberian Peninsula, today a new reality exists. The decline in the maritime transport activity and the development of industrial fishing has forced, the youngest generation in particular, to seek alternatives in the urban centres, leaving behind those who could not escape.
In 1991 the military base closed and, in some way, so did the towns that surrounded it. Today in La Estaca there is a new convergence between the abandonment and memory of those who continued their lives between the Atlantic and the Cantabrian Sea.
